Plastic Art

Plastic art is art that is created by molding a type of plastic material. This art does not have to be made of just plastic, but it can be made of almost any material that can be molded. This includes stone, concrete, wood, ceramics, or metal. Basically any material can be used in plastic art. Although it is typically used to describe modern sculptures, plastic art has been expanded to include most visual arts that include anything that has been molded. Included will be several works that are classified as plastic art pieces. First, we have a work by Damien Hirst, a British artist born in 1965. This piece is For the Love of God, finished in 2007 in London.

This is an interesting piece made of platinum and then covered in diamonds. The teeth, however, are real. The are the teeth taken out of the skull that this one was based off of. This sculpture is nice to look at and fits within the theme, as the platinum was molded to create the skull. Next is a work by the French textile artist Edith Meusnier. This is Sarabande, created in Lyon, France in 2008.

This is a very nice piece created with polypropylene strips. It is an outdoor piece that liven up the courtyard that it graces. The strips are molded to create the unique shape, making it fit into this theme. Now, we have another work by Edith Meusnier. This one is L’Entretemps. It was made in Seiche, France in 2009.

This piece is made of gift ribbon, molded into these special shapes so they can be identified as plastic art sculptures. I really like this piece, especially the way that it is in the pond. The pond makes it much more appealing. Next we have two works by Antony Gormley, the British sculptor born in 1950. First is Angel of the North, finished in 1998 and located just outside of Tyne,  UK.

This is a 200 ton steel sculpture located just off of a major highway in the UK. At 20 meters tall, this gigantic sculpture is molded out of steel, so it is a plastic art piece. I think that it is really cool, especially for the size. I like the color of the statue the best. Next, also by Gormley, is Vessel, a slightly smaller steel sculpture created in 2012.

It is made of 39 steel boxes molded and stuck together to create this beautiful piece. It is supposed to be a man, which is easy to tell. I like this, as it is a cool way to make a man, an otherwise widely created sculpture. Finally, we have one last piece by Mark Di Suvero, the American sculptor born in 1933. This piece is Arikidea, a steel sculpture finished in 1982.

This piece is supposed to be a modern representation of a spider. It is made of steel I beams from old New York skyscrapers. I do not mind spiders, so I like this piece. I think that it looks cool. The molded steel allows it to be placed in this theme. There are many interesting examples of plastic art made in the modern era. Plastic art can be made of many different materials, and it is very cool to look at.

  1. Your theme is cool because it’s not what you think of when you first read the title, I thought it would be a pieces just made out of plastic, turns out I thought wrong. I appreciated how you explained the materials that went into making each piece of work you showed us, it really helped to make the connection that they were indeed pieces of plastic art. I really enjoy the sculpture L’Entretemps because it looks simple and very unique. I would also have to agree with you on the fact the reflection from the pond really magnifies its appeal. Here is a link to a cool steel sculpture that I found if you want to take a look at it. http://www.stainlessteelnews.com/cloud-city-stainless-steel-art-at-the-met/ . Keep up the good work!

  2. Love the architectural theme in your blog. It is very interesting and not what you would have expected. I love the polypropylene strip piece. The explanation of the pieces was very interesting.
